Ceramic Porcelain Shell Hemisphere

This is a Ceramic Porcelain Shell Hemisphere. The inner negative of a shell and the outer cubic shell are poured together seamlessly. Made from approximately a 500+ piece mold. Finished with a patina of minerals, oxides and glazed interior.

My process involves making molds of natural objects, a shell in this case and then using the negative shape in my ceramic work. It’s complicated to bounce back and forth between positive and negative shapes. However, the end result, which is not a shell but it’s mirror image-the negative, is very interesting. It hints at the actual object so strongly that most people will not realize it’s the negative.

Add the intense structural or architectural vocabulary inherent in my work and the finished piece is magical, otherworldly and has a timeless feel to it.
